Guest House by Rumi (online)

Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi or shortly Rumi is one of the most evocative persian poets of the 13th century. One of my favourite poems is a simple one called The Guest House. Inspired by this poem, in this session we will explore through writing, which guests are we happy to greet and which guests do we hope never knocks on our door. Which guests overstay and which guests haven’t visited in a long time. Yet through all these reflections, to also contemplate on the wisdom offered by Rumi to welcome each and every one of them.

For your reference, below is the original poem translated by Coleman Barks.

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

— Rumi, translation by Coleman Barks (The Essential Rumi)
